Alex, Ladybird, and the Brokenpress Cocktail Credenza
Brokenpress Design+Fabrication simply put, is Mid-Century Modernized. We create furniture with a mid-century feel, while accommodating modern living needs, with a nod to audiophiles.
We’re a husband and wife business based in the northwest side of Chicago featuring the work of Alexander Dunham, in partnership with Jennifer Bakija, better know as Ladybird. We are both longtime fans of mid-century styling and no strangers to music. Alex has played music longer than he has been building furniture and Ladybird is a vinyl crate digger, always looking to add to their collection.
Don’t let the word “custom” scare you away. Our pieces are made to order for a variety of reasons. This allows for customization in both size, wood species and specific needs of the client. Alex’s listens to what their furniture needs are, then takes his fifteen plus years of experience making furniture and working with designers and architects to design the perfect piece. From there, he takes functional design alongside excellent craftsmanship to build a piece clients love.
With the resurgence of vinyl continuing to build, our audio credenza line, including the Standard and the Princeton, is championed by novice and serious audiophiles looking to find aesthetically pleasing component and record storage. Our hardwood surfboard tables look so authentic, that they’ve been mistaken for genuine vintage pieces. Custom fireplace surrounds and hutches, both freestanding and built in, are built with craftsmanship to last for generations, alongside high-traffic benches which need to withstand lots of wear and tear.
Let us create something for you.

I recently purchased one of Brokenpress’ Standard audiophile credenzas in walnut. It’s perfect and exactly what I needed for my stereo and LP collection. Alex was super helpful and I would definitely recommend to anyone that needs a well-designed and well thought out piece of audio furniture. – Patrick O.
Excellent craftsmanship. We’ve had Brokenpress design quite a few pieces (dining bench, audio credenza, walnut mantlepiece, built in shelves) and not only do they look fantastic, Alex’s input and tweaks helped really make the pieces perfect. Each project has been made better by his knowledge and experience. If you’re into audio gear or a vinyl collector, you know how much a pain it is to find something to hold you collection that didn’t come flat packed from Sweden (not that there’s anything wrong with that,) but at a certain point, you want to have it made just how you like, right? At least, I did. And that’s what got us started. My audio credenza holds my stereo, and roughly 300 LPs while looking beautiful and one of a kind. And , it won’t need to be replaced anytime soon.Every time we have people over, they always ohh & ahh over all the pieces that we are lucky enough to have. If you want amazingly solid, beautiful custom pieces made to perfectly to fit your space, Brokenpress is the only shop you need to talk to.Simply put: Brokenpress is where it’s at. If you value style over substance, craft and innovation over the banal and assembly line output, get in touch with Brokenpress. You won’t be disappointed. – Mark D.
I recently had a media credenza built for my stereo equipment. I had shopped around for a few months but could never find a piece that I liked that suited my needs. Finally I decided to have one custom built and I went with Brokenpress Design. Brokenpress came to my house to take measurements, to ask me how I was going to use the piece, how much cord management I needed, what finish I wanted, etc. A few weeks later, the finished piece was delivered…and it’s perfect. The build quality is top notch and it is just beautiful! Now my hi-fi gear has a proper home and my living room has a great focal point. I’m one very happy customer! – Sean Z.
Alex crafted a new mantel for our living room fireplace that quickly become a favorite piece in our entire house. I know his specialty is mid-century modern, but what everyone may not know is that he is extremely adept at lots of other styles as well. We wanted a more traditional look and he has such a mastery of woodcraft that he came up with the prefect combination of simplicity and elegance. Alex even came up with a solution to running our TV cable cords behind the mantel woodwork to hide them so we wouldn’t have to drill through the floor. It was brilliant, and saved us time. – Kate H.
I called on Alex with a truly unique furniture related problem. He came up with an imaginative, adaptable and sturdy solution that very well served my needs in ways not imagined at the time the project was initiated. – Steve N.
